Where to Eat in Ojochal: A Restaurant Guide from Vista Bendita

Ojochal punches well above its weight for food. For a town of a few hundred people carved into the rainforest hills of Costa Rica’s Southern Pacific coast, the culinary scene is genuinely remarkable — French bakeries, Belgian beer bars, sushi, Italian, farm-to-table, and some of the best traditional casados you’ll find anywhere in the country.

We’ve been eating our way through the area since we built Vista Bendita and will keep updating this list as we go. Where we’ve been personally, we say so. Where we haven’t, we’ll tell you that too. Check out our local reveiws.

A note on drive times: Vista Bendita sits on a mountain road above the village. Getting down to the main Costanera highway takes 5–8 minutes on its own, so factor that into every estimate below.

What an amazing place. The best patacones I’ve had — and I’ve had a lot. Everything is fresh. The open kitchen concept where you can watch the chefs work is fantastic. Set on top of the mountain with an incredible view looking out over the Pacific. Don’t miss this one.

A handcrafted café tucked into Ojochal — specialty coffee, artisan pastries, and a garden dome setting that makes you want to stay longer than you planned. This is the little coffee shop that makes you feel like you’re part of something special the moment you walk in. Our personal recommendation for a morning coffee stop in the village. Traditional casados, hearty soups, daily specials on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Open ~7AM–9PM. Budget-friendly and full of locals. A reliable breakfast or lunch stop.

Uvita is about 25–35 minutes north on the Costanera. Worth the drive for a day trip, whale watching, or a change of scene. These are the standouts.

Whale Tail Brewery

Award-winning craft beer brewed on-site. All dishes made from scratch. Open noon–9:30PM with regular live music. The anchor of Uvita’s food scene.

Mosaic Wine Bar & Café

40 wines, craft cocktails, quality coffee, paninis, cheese and charcuterie boards, sushi, and Japanese fusion. Vegan and vegetarian options. Sister restaurant to Momento in Ojochal — wine shop delivers to Ojochal.

Sabor Español

Chefs from Ibiza and Barcelona cooking paellas, fresh seafood, and Mediterranean-Spanish cuisine. Spanish wines and sangria. Genuinely distinctive in this region.

Indomitos Café

Healthy vegetarian and vegan café. Falafel burgers, vegan omelets, smoothies, and desserts. Best plant-based option in the area.

House of Ginger

Thai, Chinese, and Asian cuisine. Vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options available. Consistently well-reviewed.

Pizza Time

The highest-rated pizza in Uvita and one of the best in the region. Neapolitan style with ethically sourced ingredients. Vegetarian and vegan options available. Worth the drive whether you dine in or call ahead for takeout to bring back to Vista Bendita.

Bagel Time

One of the highest-rated spots in Uvita. NY-style bagel bakery with hot breakfasts, pastries, fresh juices, and lunch sandwiches.

Sebas Restaurant

Artisan wood-fired pizzas and Argentinian cuisine. Live music and a living tree growing through the center of the open dining room. Great ambiance.

Hola India

Authentic Indian, Chinese, and Pakistani cuisine from chefs from the heart of India. Vegetarian options. Surprisingly excellent for this corner of Costa Rica.

Los Laureles Bar & Restaurant

Top-ranked on TripAdvisor. Huge burgers (veggie too), fresh fish tacos, tropical salads. Local cuisine, Latin, seafood, and Costa Rican dishes.

Carlitos Restaurant & Bar

Latin-fusion specializing in Mexican dishes with Costa Rican, Cuban, and American influence. Way off the beaten path — locals love it.

La Fogata Pizzeria

Wide pizza range — pesto pollo, artichoke, veggie, gluten-free, and dessert pizza. Also known for wood-fired BBQ chicken and ribs.
