The region around Ojochal is one of the most waterfall-rich corners of Costa Rica. Within an hour of Vista Bendita you have jungle swimming holes, a 45-meter double cascade, a natural rock slide, a waterfall with a boulder wedged in its face, and hidden pools that most tourists never find.
This is our complete guide — every waterfall we know about, organized by drive time, with honest notes on what each one is actually like.
A note on our visits: where we’ve been personally, we say so. Where we haven’t, we’ll tell you that too. The ones marked ✅ are personal recommendations from experience.
Before You Go — Tips That Apply Everywhere
Go in the morning. Waterfalls are more dramatic in the morning light, and the jungle is cooler. By afternoon the heat builds fast.
Water shoes are essential. River crossings, slippery rocks, and wet trails are universal. Chacos or Tevas are better than hiking boots in this environment.
Check conditions after rain. Rivers rise quickly in the Southern Pacific. After heavy rain, waterfalls are more powerful but access can be dangerous. Ask locally before heading out.
Bring more water than you think you need. The combination of heat, humidity, and physical activity depletes hydration faster than you expect.
Cash only at most sites. Entry fees at smaller waterfalls and private properties are cash-only. Have colones or small US dollars.
5–15 Minutes from Vista Bendita
✅ Cascada de Ojochal — The Local Waterfall
~5 min · Ojochal · Small entry fee · Privately owned
The closest waterfall to Vista Bendita — and genuinely one of the most serene. A local family owns and maintains this hidden gem right in Ojochal. Refreshing swimming hole, relaxed and quiet atmosphere, picnic areas on site. The crowd level is usually low to moderate — this is a local spot, not a tourist attraction, and it feels that way in the best possible sense.
We’ve been here and it’s perfect for a short excursion — close enough for an afternoon visit without planning a full day. Check the Facebook page for current hours and entrance fees before heading over.
Best for: Quick refreshing swim, families, afternoon escape, guests who want a waterfall without a big day trip.
Cascada El Pavón — The Boulder Waterfall
~10 min · South of Ojochal toward Punta Mala · Entry: Free
Located approximately 4 kilometers from Ojochal, Cascada El Pavón is a charming waterfall distinguished by a unique rock formation — a large boulder wedged between two rock walls, appearing to float in the cascade. The site is relatively secluded and often less crowded than other attractions, making it ideal for those seeking tranquility.
Access is free — Costa Rican law prohibits charging for entry to rivers and beaches. You can park along the road near the entrance or at the nearby Centro Turístico Tilapias El Pavón restaurant, which offers parking and dining options. Worth combining with lunch at El Pavón — fresh tilapia cooked from the on-site ponds, rustic riverside setting.
Best for: Photography, solitude, combining with lunch at El Pavón, short waterfall visit close to Vista Bendita.
20–30 Minutes from Vista Bendita
✅ Catarata Uvita — Natural Rock Slide
~20–25 min · Near Uvita · Entry: ~$2.50 USD · Open ~8AM daily
We’ve done this one — the zip line and waterfall combo with Uvita Paradise Adventures was excellent. The waterfall has a natural rock slide that guests slide down directly into the pool below. Genuinely fun for all ages. The zip line runs parallel to the waterfall, giving you an aerial view before you swim.
Due to its popularity it can get busy during peak season. Go early. The entrance fee (~$2.50 USD, cash, payable at the small café at the entrance) contributes to site maintenance. Bathrooms and changing areas on site.
Best for: Families, adventure seekers, combining with the zip line tour for a full morning. One of the most fun waterfall experiences near Vista Bendita.
Santa Lucía Falls
~25–30 min · Near Uvita · Guided tours required
A less-known but beautiful waterfall in the mountains above Uvita. Santa Lucía offers a more private setting than the Uvita Waterfall — lush greenery, swimming pools at the base, and far fewer crowds. A 6-mile total hike with stops at multiple waterfalls along the route. Guided private tours are the only reliable way to access this trail.
Book through the Uvita Information Center or local tour operators. A genuinely beautiful full-day hike for guests who want something immersive and off the main tourist trail.
Best for: Experienced hikers, guests who want a guided multi-waterfall route away from crowds. Full day commitment.
30–40 Minutes from Vista Bendita
✅ Poza Azul — The Hidden Pool
~30–35 min · Near Dominical · Entry: Free · 4×4 required
We’ve been here and it’s very private and very pretty. Tucked away in the jungle, Poza Azul is a peaceful retreat with a picturesque swimming hole surrounded by lush forest. The waterfall itself isn’t large, but the setting is incredibly serene. Free to visit, and because it’s not as famous as Nauyaca or Uvita Waterfall, it’s often quiet — sometimes completely empty.
A 4×4 is required to reach it — the road is rough. Check conditions before heading out, especially in green season. Bring everything you need — no facilities on site.
Best for: Guests who want a genuinely private jungle swimming hole. Very peaceful. One of our personal favorites in the area.
45–55 Minutes from Vista Bendita
✅ Nauyaca Waterfalls — The Best in the Region
~45–50 min · Near Dominical · Entry: $8 on foot / $27 by truck or ATV
We went by ATV and it was absolutely the right call — the best waterfall experience in the region. Two large cascades deep within untouched jungle, accessible via private land near Dominical. The lower fall is 45 meters with a deep green pool. The upper fall is narrower and more dramatic. Swimming is extraordinary — the kind of pool that makes you want to stay for hours.
Nauyaca comprises two large cascades considered among Costa Rica’s most impressive waterfalls. A favored destination that draws significant visitors, particularly on weekends and holidays.
Access options:
On foot: Hike of approximately 4km each way through dense rainforest. Entry fee $8 per person. Budget 2–3 hours each way. Demanding but doable for fit hikers. Bring water shoes — multiple river crossings.
By truck (Don Lulo’s): 10-minute truck ride followed by a 600-meter walk to the falls. $27 USD per adult includes entrance fee, transportation, parking, bathrooms, changing facilities, and trail access. Advance booking recommended. nauyacawaterfalls.com
By ATV — our recommendation ✅: The ATV route through the jungle to the falls is an adventure in itself — passing through private land, river crossings, and primary rainforest before arriving at the base of the falls. Book through local ATV tour operators in Dominical or Uvita.
By horseback: Monday–Saturday, departs 8AM, ~$80–100 per person. A beautiful way to arrive. Book through Don Lulo’s or local operators.
Best for: The single best waterfall experience accessible from Vista Bendita. Go by ATV if you can. Full day — depart early.
Hidden Waterfall Uvita — The Bamboo Forest Route
~25–30 min · Uvita area · Entry: Free · Directions via bamboo forest road
A free, off-the-beaten-path waterfall accessible via a bamboo forest road outside Uvita. Not well signposted — ask locally in Uvita for current directions. The bamboo forest section of the approach is stunning in itself. Best visited with a local who knows the route.
Best for: Adventure seekers, guests who want something completely off the tourist map. Combine with the Uvita Bamboo Forest visit.
60–75 Minutes from Vista Bendita
Eco Chontales — Multi-Waterfall Adventure
~60–75 min · 4×4 required · Guided tour recommended
A more remote multi-waterfall destination accessible by ATV or 4×4 through mountain terrain. Multiple cascades in a pristine jungle setting, with swimming holes throughout. Not yet visited personally — book through local ATV tour operators who know the route. Best as a guided experience rather than self-guided.
Best for: Adventure seekers, ATV enthusiasts, guests looking for a full-day remote waterfall experience.
Diamante Waterfall & Cave — Costa Rica’s Tallest
~60–75 min · Guided only · Approximately 600 feet — tallest in Costa Rica
At approximately 600 feet, Diamante is the tallest waterfall in Costa Rica — and it comes with a cave at its base that you can walk behind the falls to reach. A genuinely extraordinary natural feature that most visitors to Costa Rica never see. Guided tours only — the approach involves technical terrain that requires an experienced guide.
Not yet visited personally. Book through operators in the Dominical or San Isidro area who specialize in this route.
Best for: Serious hikers and waterfall enthusiasts who want the most dramatic cascade in the country. Plan a full day.
San Luis Falls
~70–80 min · Mountain road above Uvita · 4×4 required
A waterfall in the mountains above Uvita in the San Luis area — the same region as Metamorfinca retreat center and Café Don Emilio coffee farm. The mountain road provides spectacular views of the Pacific on the way up. Combine with a coffee tour or a Metamorfinca visit for a full mountain day. Not yet visited personally.
Best for: Combining with a mountain day trip — coffee tour, elevated views, waterfall swimming.
