La Pala

Our Favorite Restaurants

One of the best parts of staying in Ojochal is discovering the incredible local food scene. This small mountain-and-ocean community has quietly become one of Costa Rica’s top culinary destinations, blending local ingredients with influences from around the world.

From casual cafés and hidden jungle restaurants to fine dining experiences overlooking the Pacific, there’s an amazing variety of places to explore within a short drive of Vista Bendita. These are a few of our personal favorites so far — the places we keep talking about long after the meal is over.

Our Personal Picks So Far:

La Pala

~3 min · On the road to Vista Bendita

An absolute gem. The best patacones we’ve had in Costa Rica — and we’ve tried a lot of them. Everything tastes fresh, the open kitchen lets you watch the chefs at work, and the mountain-top setting overlooking the Pacific is unforgettable. Don’t skip this one.

Citrus Restaurant

~12–15 min · South Ojochal · TripAdvisor

Five stars across the board. From the custom cocktails and mocktails to the desserts, everything was exceptional. Citrus is widely considered one of Ojochal’s premier fine dining experiences, and it absolutely lives up to the reputation. Reservations are highly recommended.

Heliconia

~10–12 min · Ojochal

An intimate jungle dining experience with excellent service, beautifully prepared food, and a setting that feels genuinely special. This one easily earns a place on our short list alongside Citrus and La Pala.

Tagua Café Raíz

~10 min · Calle Palmeras, Ojochal · TripAdvisor · Facebook · +506 8615 4950

A handcrafted café tucked into the hills of Ojochal, serving specialty coffee, artisan pastries, fresh omelets, and breakfast in a lush garden setting. One of the highlights is their unique ojoche-based coffee alternative — a rich, roasted drink made from locally harvested ramón seeds with deep earthy flavors somewhere between coffee, cacao, and toasted nuts. The pastries were excellent, the omelets fresh and flavorful, and the atmosphere relaxed, welcoming, and uniquely local — the kind of place where you stop for breakfast and end up lingering awhile. One of our favorite slow-morning spots in the village. Check their Instagram for current hours.

Potz Bistro and Coffee House

~12–15 min · Ojochal Gardens · Facebook

A relaxed and welcoming café-bistro with an excellent, surprisingly diverse menu that keeps us coming back every trip. The on-site bakery is genuinely first class, with fresh breads, pastries, and desserts that rival much larger cafés. Potz is one of our favorite places to stop for frescas, breakfast, coffee, or a casual dinner after a day exploring the area. Known for brisket sandwiches, creative vegan options, craft beers, and a resident mixologist, it also hosts popular Noche Flamenca evenings featuring live flamenco music, tapas, and sangría. A great laid-back spot that feels very much part of the Ojochal community.

Pizza Time

~25-35 min · Uvita

We stopped here on the way back from a ziplining adventure in Uvita, and it turned out to be the perfect ending to an incredible day. Pizza Time is widely considered one of the best pizza spots in the region, serving excellent Neapolitan-style pizza with high-quality ingredients, an outstanding crust, and plenty of vegetarian and vegan options.

One of the fun quirks of the restaurant is the timer button mounted on the wall. If you can stop the timer exactly at 10.0 seconds, you win a free meal. We came painfully close — close enough that we’ll definitely be back to try again.

More to Come

One of the best parts of life around Ojochal and Uvita is that there’s always another hidden café, roadside soda, bakery, beach bar, or unforgettable meal waiting to be discovered. We’ll continue updating this list as we explore more of Costa Rica’s South Pacific coast and find new favorites along the way.

Some places become part of the routine every trip. Others surprise us unexpectedly after a waterfall hike, a beach day, or an adventure in the mountains. Either way, we hope these recommendations help you experience a little of what makes this area so special.

We’ll keep adding to the list — one great meal, coffee stop, and sunset at a time.
