A Perfect Day Trip from Vista Bendita: Dominical & Uvita

Some days you don’t want to leave the deck at Vista Bendita — and we won’t blame you. But when you’re ready to explore, the stretch of coast just north of us delivers one of the best easy day trips in the region: the laid-back surf town of Dominical, the famous Whale’s Tail at Uvita, a waterfall or two, and more good food than you can fit in a single day.

Dominical sits about 35–45 minutes north of Vista Bendita on the Costanera (Route 34); Uvita is roughly the midpoint, 25–35 minutes away. That makes it easy to string them together — Uvita on the way up or back, Dominical at the far end. Here’s how we’d run the day.

The Day, as a To-Do List

Think of this as a checklist, not a schedule. Pick the pieces that suit your group, and let the tide chart make a couple of decisions for you (more on that below).

☐ 1. Leave early — and check the tide first

Before you pull out of the driveway, check the Ojochal tide chart. The single best experience of the day — walking out onto the Whale’s Tail sandbar at Uvita — is only possible around low tide. Plan the day around that one fact and everything else falls into place. Mornings are also cooler, wildlife is more active, and you’ll beat the heat and the crowds.

☐ 2. Coffee and breakfast on the way

Fuel up before or shortly after you hit the road. Two easy options:

Pancito Café (Ojochal, ~10 min) — a beloved French-influenced café with excellent baked goods and, by local consensus, the best coconut-milk latte around. A perfect first stop before you head north.
Bagel Time (Uvita) — if you’d rather eat in Uvita, this NY-style bagel bakery is one of the highest-rated breakfast spots on the coast: hot breakfasts, pastries, and fresh juices.

☐ 3. Marino Ballena National Park & the Whale’s Tail (Uvita)

This is the headline. Marino Ballena National Park protects the sandbar that, at low tide, forms the unmistakable shape of a whale’s tail reaching into the Pacific — and yes, humpback whales really do migrate through these waters (roughly Jul–Oct and Dec–Apr). Walk out onto the Tail at low tide, swim, and take the photo everyone takes because it’s worth taking. Small park entrance fee; bring water, sun protection, and reef-friendly sunscreen.

☐ 4. A waterfall break

Two great choices, depending on your appetite for a drive:

Uvita Waterfall (Cascada Uvita) — close, easy, and fun. A short walk leads to a modest fall with a natural rock waterslide locals and kids love. Great for cooling off without committing to a big excursion.
Nauyaca Waterfalls — the region’s showstopper, between Dominical and San Isidro. Two tiers, a big swimming pool at the base, and serious “wow” factor. This one needs more time and either a guided truck/horseback trip or a long hike, so build it in only if you’re making it the day’s centerpiece. (Booking ahead through a local operator is wise.)

☐ 5. Dominical — surf, sand, and a browse

Continue north to Dominical itself: a barefoot, bohemian surf town with a long beach, good waves (strong currents — swim with care and watch the flags), and a relaxed main drag of surf shops, craft stands, and open-air bars. Even if you’re not surfing, it’s a lovely place to walk, watch the lineup, and soak up the most easygoing town on the coast. Surf lessons are easy to arrange on the spot if the mood strikes.

☐ 6. Beat the afternoon heat with lunch (food options below)

By now you’ve earned a long, slow lunch. See the picks just ahead.

☐ 7. Optional: time it for sunset

If your group has the stamina, the west-facing coast here does spectacular sunsets. You can either chase one with a drink in Dominical/Uvita or — our usual move — head back to Vista Bendita in time to watch it from the deck with the day’s salt still on your skin.

Where to Eat: Food Options for the Day

We’ve eaten our way up and down this stretch. A few reliable picks, sorted by the kind of stop you’re after:

Breakfast / Coffee

Pancito Café (Ojochal) — coconut-milk latte and pastries; ideal pre-departure.
Bagel Time (Uvita) — top-rated breakfast bagels, juices, and pastries.

Lunch — casual & local

Los Laureles (Uvita) — consistently top-ranked on TripAdvisor; huge burgers (veggie too), fresh fish tacos, tropical salads. A safe, satisfying group choice.
Soda La Macha (between Dominical and Uvita, ~Km 148) — a classic roadside soda with some of the freshest fish around, and a true local feel. They also sell fresh fish to take home, so it doubles as a stock-up stop on the way back.
Beachside ceviche stands south of Dominical — fresh ceviche after a beach session; pure Costa Rica.

Lunch / Dinner — a step up

Whale Tail Brewery (Uvita) — award-winning craft beer brewed on-site, everything made from scratch, and regular live music. The anchor of Uvita’s food scene and a great mid-day reset.
Mosaic Wine Bar & Café (Uvita) — 40 wines, charcuterie and cheese boards, sushi and Japanese fusion, and quality coffee. The grown-up option.
Pizza Time (Uvita) — the highest-rated pizza in Uvita and arguably the region; Neapolitan-style. Dine in, or call ahead for takeaway to bring back to the house.

Something different

Sabor Español (Uvita) — chefs from Ibiza and Barcelona doing paella, fresh seafood, and Spanish wines. Genuinely distinctive for this corner of the coast.
Hola India (Uvita) — surprisingly excellent Indian and Pakistani cuisine, with vegetarian options.

The condensed loop is: low-tide Whale’s Tail at Uvita → lunch at Los Laureles or Whale Tail Brewery → a quick stop at Uvita Waterfall → home for sunset on the deck. That’s a full, satisfying day with almost no stress — exactly the kind of day this coast does best.
