Art, Photography & Creative Experiences Near Ojochal

Ojochal has quietly become one of the most creative communities on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast. A concentration of expat artists, local craftspeople, and international creatives drawn by the jungle, the light, and the pace of life has produced a genuinely surprising arts scene — galleries, weekly markets, painting workshops, photography lessons in the rainforest, and a village market where you can buy a hand-painted canvas between buying a papaya and a croissant.

This is the guide for guests who want to engage with the creative side of this community.

⭐ Photography Lessons with Melissa — Our Personal Recommendation

~Local to Ojochal ·

My daughter did photography lessons with a local photographer in Ojochal and she was excellent. Whether you shoot on a phone or a dedicated camera, this region offers extraordinary subject matter — the wildlife at Vista Bendita, the sea caves at Playa Ventanas, the waterfalls, the jungle light at dawn, and the Pacific sunsets. Having someone who knows exactly where the light falls and when, and how to help you capture what you’re actually seeing rather than what the camera wants to give you, transforms the experience.

They worked with all levels — complete beginners learning composition and light for the first time through to guests who want to work on specific techniques. Sessions can be based at Vista Bendita, at local beaches, or in the jungle depending on what you want to shoot.

Contact: Book ahead as availability is limited.

Best for: All levels. Families who want to come home with photographs that actually capture the trip. Serious photographers who want a local expert eye. One of the most personal and memorable experiences available from Vista Bendita.

Galleries

⭐ Galería 1084 — Uvita’s Premier Fine Art Gallery

📍 Google Maps ~25 min · Uvita · Tue–Sat 10AM–4PM · Website · WhatsApp: +506 8627-9353

The Costa Ballena was lacking in true art gallery experiences — Galería 1084 opened in November 2022 and changed that. A serious gallery representing more than two dozen of the area’s top artisans, it serves serious art collectors as well as guests looking for something genuinely beautiful to take home.

The collection spans fine art paintings, bespoke jewelry, ceramics, sculpture, photography, indigenous art, functional furnishings, stained and blown glass, and one-of-a-kind handmade pieces. More than just a gallery, it’s a creative hub offering rotating exhibitions, artist-led workshops, and custom commissions.

Monthly workshops for adults and schoolchildren cover basket weaving, mask painting, mosaic, and functional art. Local and international artists appear for demonstrations, and the gallery occasionally hosts author events and special exhibitions. Sign up for their newsletter to know what’s on during your visit.

Directions: Half a kilometer east of Banco Costa Rica (BCR) in Uvita. International shipping available for purchases.

Best for: Art lovers, gift shopping, guests looking for something genuinely special to take home. The workshop calendar is worth checking before your arrival — some of the best sessions book out.

Markets & Local Artists

Ojochal Wednesday Market — Art, Produce & the Best Croissants in Costa Rica

📍 Google Maps ~5 min · Ojochal · Wednesday mornings · Behind the Asada

A weekly market in the market space behind the Asada in Ojochal — fresh seasonal vegetables, fruit, fresh-squeezed orange juice, fruit wines, honey, and handmade preserves. A local woodworker sells beautiful bowls and handcrafted pieces. And the best croissants outside France.

The art scene shows up here too. Local painter Angeline Marie Martinez sets up most Wednesdays with her colorful wildlife paintings — hummingbirds, cats, and nature-inspired pieces. She works on commissions in her sketchbook between conversations and is happy to chat about her work. Other local artisans rotate through — jewelry, textiles, and small crafts.

A Wednesday morning at the Ojochal market is one of the most genuinely local experiences available from Vista Bendita. Go early, bring cash, and leave room for a croissant.

Best for: Local atmosphere, buying directly from artists, fresh produce for the week’s cooking, a genuine community experience.

Uvita Saturday Feria — Art & Craft Alongside Produce

📍 Google Maps ~25 min · Uvita · Saturday mornings · 7AM–noon approx.

The larger of the two weekly markets — busier and more varied than Ojochal’s Wednesday market. Local artisans selling handmade jewelry, textiles, painted pieces, and crafts alongside fresh produce, bread, and food stalls. A good source for handmade gifts and locally produced art at accessible prices. Go early — the best pieces go fast and the vendors start packing up by noon.

Best for: Handmade gifts, local crafts, combining with a Uvita beach morning.

Artisan Beach Vendors — Dominical

~40 min · Dominical Beach · Daily

Dominical’s beach has a running line of artisan vendors along the front — local craftspeople selling handmade jewelry, paintings, clothing, and souvenirs directly on the sand. The quality varies but genuinely handcrafted pieces are available at prices well below what you’d find in a gallery. A good browse before or after a surf lesson.

Best for: Casual shopping, handmade jewelry, local crafts at beach prices.

Workshops & Classes

Galería 1084 — Monthly Art Workshops

~25 min · Uvita · Website · Book via WhatsApp +506 8627-9353

Monthly workshops covering basket weaving, mask painting, mosaic art, and functional art events. Both adults and children welcome. Local and international artists occasionally lead special workshops. The gallery posts upcoming workshops on their website and newsletter — sign up before your trip to see what’s scheduled during your stay.

Best for: Hands-on creative experience, guests who want to make something rather than just look at things, families with older children.

Boruca Mask Painting & Indigenous Crafts

~1 hr south · Boruca Village · Book at borucacostarica.org · 4×4 required

Already covered in the cultural attractions post — but worth noting here as the most authentic craft workshop within reach of Vista Bendita. Carving and painting a traditional Boruca balsa mask under the guidance of an indigenous master painter is a hands-on creative experience that goes well beyond a workshop. You leave with something genuinely meaningful.

Best for: Guests who want the most culturally significant creative experience in the region.

The Creative Community of Ojochal

Worth understanding as context: Ojochal is not a typical Costa Rican town. The international community that settled here over the last two decades — French, Canadian, American, British, and other expats — has created a concentration of creative professionals unusual for a village this small. The restaurant scene reflects it (Ojochal has more fine dining per capita than almost anywhere in the country). So does the Wednesday market, the gallery scene, and the density of artists, photographers, and makers who live and work in the hills above the coast.

For guests who are themselves creative — photographers, painters, writers — Vista Bendita and Ojochal offer something genuinely rare: a beautiful, unhurried environment with extraordinary natural subject matter, a community of like-minded people, and enough infrastructure (good coffee, reliable internet, excellent food) to actually work. Several guests have told us they got more done here in a week than they do at home in a month.
